Introducing Daisy – An Articulate Storyline-built Web Application Made Possible With The eLearning Magic Toolkit By Discover eLearning

This week’s Articulate eLearning Heroes Challenge asked developers to create an experience inside Storyline using all three custom variable types available to use inside our projects.

In the case of my demo, the text variable is utilised extensively by the eLearning Magic Toolkit in order to both capture and transfer project data (user text entry values for example) to the many different artificial intelligence APIs which our plugin gives Articulate Storyline 360 access to, including the GPT-4 Turbo API from OpenAI, and the Text-To-Speech Multilingual V2 API from ElevenLabs.

Number variables allow us to track how many objects within the project have been manipulated through our custom scripting, and the True/False variable ensures that when certain layers are visible to the user (such as the layer that controls the playback of the ElevenLabs generated narration track) we don’t allow the track to be replayed until the audio object has returned an ‘onended’ state value.

This project also includes a mouse tracking constraint control system which I have built myself for Articulate Storyline, which is capable of producing mouse movement-based user interactions similar to that of Rive. It is a bit fiddly however, and very time consuming to build and properly customise, so I don’t see it being beneficial in actual real-world use compared to what is possible instead with a tool like Rive.

Still, it’s a cool effect which I might build into a future Advanced eLearning Developer Series course, for the sake of showcasing just how extensive JavaScript can be for controlling interaction and animation within Articulate Storyline 360.
